Terry Fox Park
On June 26, 1984, Terry Fox park opened in the Townline / Bloor Street neighbourhood. Its opening coincided with the City of Oshawa’s 60th anniversary celebrations and the Province of Ontario’s Bicentennial.
The park is named for Terry Fox, Canadian athlete and cancer research advocate who embarked on his Marathon of Hope in 1980. Terry Fox died of cancer in 1981, at the age of 22. His parents were on hand in Oshawa for the opening of Terry Fox Park. His mother, Betty, was quoted as saying “Naming this park after our son Terry is a great tribute. The park is not only beautiful, it has obviously been constructed with a great deal of thoughts. Its proximity to the Simcoe Hall Children’s Centre* will allow it to serve all children. And Terry loved children. They were a special source of inspiration for him during his run.”¹
