Wilson’s Furniture

1934–present

Wilson’s furniture was first opened in 1934 by Edward Wilson, and the business has stayed open and operating to this day by his grandchildren who celebrated the stores 90th anniversary in 2024.

Edward originally founded the business because he believed that the new residents in Oshawa deserved to have access to affordable furniture for their homes and with the help of the local community, he was able to convert an old roller rink into the first location for the store. By the 1940s, they expanded and had a second location on King Street West.

In 1967, Edward officially retired and his daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Bob Sherman, continued the family business. They expanded the business by buying a second location Wilson’s gallery which became their showroom.

Unfortunately, in 1984 when Helen and Bob Sherman were on vacation, their next-door neighbour’s business caught fire and burnt down. The fire heavily damaged their own store causing them to tear it all down and rebuild.

Darryl and Jory Sherman, the sons of Helen and Bob Sherman, are the current owners of Wilson’s furniture and have been since 1999. They believe that their store offers an experience different from any found online as they continue to practice with the teachings and principles of their grandfather. Ensuring the business stays loyal to Oshawa’s community and stays as a reminder of how integral the Jewish community was in Oshawa’s development.
