Sunnyside Park
Sunnyside Park has been in the community for over 100 years. In 1922, the Ontario Reformer reported “installation of some playground equipment in the new Sunnyside Park” was addressed at the inaugural meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners in 1922.
During the 1940s, there was talk of new playground equipment, courtesy of the Kinsmen Club and also talk of expanding the park, which was “referred to the Town Planning Commission for consideration” (Daily Times-Gazette, 29 Apr 1947, p 1).
Throughout the years, the local newspapers reported on different neighbourhood associations and their sports teams, and Sunnyside was one such park making the sports pages. In the early days of Club Carib, meetings were held at Sunnyside Park’s club house.
In 1967, the Oshawa Times reported that Sunnyside Park was larger around the turn of the century than it was in the Centennial year as church league baseball was played there. It reportedly “extended both north and east of its present boundaries and included the area that is now Stacey Avenue, James Street and the portion of Drew Street, north of the ‘Olive Avenue Terraces.’”
In the early 2020s, the City of Oshawa announced plans to refurbish ten city parks, Sunnyside included, and proposed changes include replacement playground equipment, site furnishings, tree plantings, and naturalization areas. It officially reopened in August 2024, and the park now boasts a new playground, accessible pathways, a shade structure with seating, and a multi-court surface for basketball, ball hockey and other sports.
